826 Valencia Recruitment Campaign

Based in San Francisco, 826 Valencia is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting students who live in under-resourced communities with their writing skills. They offer free writing, tutoring, and publishing programs for youth ages six through eighteen. Volunteer tutors are at the core of how they serve thousands of students in San Francisco every year. The majority of their students are youth of color, and they especially seek volunteers who are bilingual or identify as Black, Indigenous, or People of Color (BIPOC).  As part of the student-led studio TBD*, douglas.barron and I helped 826 Valencia create a volunteer recruitment campaign to increase the number of volunteer signups and BIPOC or bilingual volunteers. We focused on several avenues for reaching potential volunteers in the Bay Area. Ultimately, the system we created is flexible and malleable so that 826 Valencia can adapt it to their specific needs and use it across a wide variety of applications.

Plastikcomb Magazine Article

As part of the TBD* Studio, I helped design an article for Plastikcomb Magazine’s sixth edition. The article is an interview with the artist Laura Arteaga Charlton, a visual artist/printmaker based in Florida. We worked collaboratively as a group to design the article, and each of us focused on a specific spread. The spread I focused on was pages three and four. The cover of the magazine was designed by Bob Aufuldish. The challenge of this project was to display Charlton’s artwork with elegance and center the contents of the discussion.

Chamaeleon Typeface

Chamaeleon is a humanist serif typeface with a friendly handwritten feel. Like a chameleon, it’s versatile and blends into it’s environment with a lot of personality. It’s an ongoing project which currently comes in four styles: regular, oblique, bold, and bold oblique.

Big Time by Angel Olsen Album

This project is an alternate cover redesign for the album Big Time by Angel Olsen. Big Time is the fifth studio album by American singer-songwriter Angel Olsen, and her first original release since All Mirrors (2019). The album was released on June 3, 2022, by Jagjaguwar. Produced by Olsen and Jonathan Wilson, the album was preceded by the singles "All the Good Times", "Big Time" and "Through the Fires". The record was accompanied by a 28-minute visual counterpart, directed by Kimberly Stuckwisch.

"These Arms of Mine" by Otis Redding Single

This project is an alternate cover redesign for the singles “These Arms of Mine” and “Hey Hey Baby” by Otis Redding. "These Arms of Mine" is a song written by soul musician Otis Redding. Redding was at that time a member of Pat Teacake's Band, consisting of lead guitarist Johnny Jenkins, bassist Pat Teacake and vocalist/songwriter Redding, who also served as driver for Jenkins, who did not have a driver's license. Atlantic Records artist representative Joe Galkin showed interest in Jenkins and proposed to send him to a studio. On the way to a gig, Redding had the opportunity to perform the songs "Hey Hey Baby" and "These Arms of Mine" as Jenkins and house band Booker T. & the M.G.'s ended their sets earlier than scheduled.
